Last weekend I decided to jump forward to section 2b so that I could use the patterned papers made in part 2a. So I painted some papers with green and red then when they were dry I did a spot of mono printing using a mix of gouache and gesso.
Image 1 – some of the papers drying on the floor:
Image 2 – A close of up one of my favourite papers:
Image 3 – I tried doing two mono prints over each other:
Image 4 – I rather like these mono prints on book pages:
Unfortunately I couldn’t do these on an A4 pages as the glass pane I usually use for this kind of thing seems to have vanished. Where to is anyone’s guess but I was keen to get cracking so I used the nearest biggest picture frame I could find (which happened to be, um, small.
Moving on to the spiral sheets.
Image 5 – I found cutting spirals from card very therapeutic!:
Image 6 – Individual spirals cut out of card and grouped together. I deliberately used red on pink because it’s one of my favourite things!:
Image 7 – The first spiral sheet – basic spirals with some overlapping:
Image 8 - I particularly liked the negative space left by the spirals I’d cut out of red card (on the left):
Image 9 – A strip of paper wound around a pair of scissors and then squished:
Image 9 – A mix of spirals – I like the delicate spiral formed on the bottom left which is taken from a ceramic tile of a rose:
Next up were the fun 3d experiments.

I really enjoyed playing with the corrugated cardboard and I’d like to explore some more 3d spirals/swirls using inspiration from the chandelier images in my collection but I will come back to that perhaps when I’m doing my accessory later in the module.

Module 3 Chapter 1 – Spiral Source Images
Well hurrah to module three! Colour at last! This module is about spirals and movement. Chapter one is all about collecting images of spirals so I tipped out my large box of collected images. My family think I’m a bit crackers – if I see an interesting image in a magazine, newspaper or on a leaflet or napkin I stash it away in this wicker picnic box. “You should throw that rubbish away you know” says my father. Gosh no, it’s a treasure trove!
So after having a root around here’s what I came up with!
Image 1: A collection of loose images – do excuse the glare of the flash!
Image 2: Lovely shapes within a tower construction:
Image 3: Decorative ironwork in Exeter:
Image 4: The typical shell shape seen in other places such as candle holders and the icing on a muffin:
Image 5: Spirals around uprights:
Image 6: A very lovely seahorse:
Image 7: I particularly like the texture on the postcard on the Jenny Beavan postcard:
Image 8: Lots of lovely chandeliers:
Image 9: Images from a photo album on newscientist.com “Nanobristles twist to hold particles”. These provide lots of ideas for 3d constructions:
Image 10: Two postcards with spirals in the imagery:
I took a look through a sketchbook I use for doodling zentangle patterns and found a few images were relevant.
